Web10 Mar 2016 · This issue only when starting cold seems more likely to be lack of pre heat where ever that engine has it. Or maybe an injector or two issue not atomising quite right. Carbon build up etc preventing ignition. Unburnt diesel in the exhaust will show as white smoke so any of these things can cause it.
